“Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, until he comes and showers righteousness on you.” Hosea 10:12 (NIV)
It’s tough being a rule keeper – I remember those days well. My son and I had a contract – one we drew up together when he turned thirteen. Being a single parent had always forced me to attempt to stay one step ahead; and this was no time to shrink back. Pizza on the table, pen and paper in hand, my son and I drafted up a covenant contract. One that outlined how we were to treat others with respect, one that spelled out the guidelines for driving, chores, dating and homework – all designed to position us for God’s best. We even covered the consequences for when we veered off the path. We signed, dated and tacked it on the fridge. Watched a movie, ate dessert and called it a night. That simple white piece of paper would often dictate our lives. Raising my voice landed me grounded one weekend when I had made plans with friends. My son’s failure to meet curfew kept him from going out the next night. Together we faced the music and the sometimes sad ballad of our own choices, but in the end we knew that our love bound contract was positioning us for God’s best. Being a parent can be challenging to say the least, but looking back I realize God used all those experiences to draw my son and I closer. Yes, we argued, disagreed and often drove each other crazy but love always won out. Isn’t that the way God works with us? His Word is the guideline for our lives meant to protect, shield and position us so we will avoid devastating heartache and difficult consequences. God’s unfailing love always wins and draws us closer to His heart.
“Father, our names are etched in the palm of Your hands – evidence of Your amazing love.”
