“Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham.” Genesis 24:12 (NIV)
There was no bachelor on the scene or a rose extended. Just a servant on a mission for his master. The assignment – find a wife for Abraham’s son, Isaac. Wow – quite the task – yet one that Abraham totally entrusted to his servant. And one the servant totally entrusted to God. It was a transfer of utter dependence seeking God’s leading, wisdom and kindness – a prayer focused on God’s favor for his master.
Started many a morning on my knees asking God to help me through the day. Grabbed moments to whisper His name throughout my overwhelmed moments seeking strength for me. But can’t say I’ve prayed that my success, my victories, my wins would result in God’s favor and kindness toward my boss. Sorry to say…..I love to win and I love winning for me. I don’t like defeat, and I don’t like giving up. My feet are always ready for the happy dance to celebrate the joy of victory.
Wonder what would happen if instead of success for me, I sought God’s favor for my boss? Wonder how hard I would work if I knew that each task done right would bless someone else? Perhaps the greater perspective transforms my “me” focus to a grander picture that benefits God’s ultimate plan. Because when I am successful it’s really not about me but about Him – the One who empowers, the One who enables me so that others are blessed.
In the midst of our daily strivings and achievements wouldn’t it serve us all better if we prayed for God’s blessing and kindness for those we serve?
“Father it is so easy to be consumed with my world – for my benefit – help me to seek success so that all will benefit from Your blessings.”
For His Glory
