Like Dandelions

cb devo aug 19“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 (NIV)

I have taken much pleasure in watching my children and now my grandchildren pick off dandelions from the ground and blow on their puff balls until all that is left is the stem. Children giggle and celebrate the fact that only their breaths can make the composition of puff and seeds fly through the air.

The dandelion is a good demonstration of what our lives are like: fragile and breakable. The Bible speaks of the life of man as being like the flower of the field or grass, which withers and dies. In spite of its apparent fragility, however, one of the characteristics of the dandelion is that its root and leaves are used for medicinal purposes. Research shows that some cultures have been using it as a dietary ingredient for centuries.

Like the dandelion, we can make our time here on this earth count. No matter how unimportant or insignificant we think we are, we can make a difference in our communities by reaching out to people who need help. We can show comfort to those who are hurting. We can help to feed the hungry. We can volunteer. We can help with disaster relief. We can do mission work and go help others in foreign lands. We can lead Bible study groups, support groups, become a mentor for younger people, and so much more!

Randy Travis’ song “The Three Wooded Crosses” has a chorus that ends like this:

“I guess it’s not what you take when you leave this world behind you; it’s what you leave behind you when you go.”

The dandelion, once hit by the wind, sends its seeds as far away as five miles, which will yield even more dandelion plants. With the Lord’s help, we can do even more. The question is: Will we?

“Lord, please help us to reach others just like the dandelion, that even though it is planted, can send its seeds far, far away. ”

For His Glory
