When Ordinary Is Transformed to Extraordinary

“We all, with unveiled faces, are looking as in a mirror at the glory of the Lord and are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory.” 2 Corinthians 3:18a (ESV)

He was just an ordinary teenager destined to be a diary farmer. Nothing special. But then he met Jesus and the life of Billy Graham would never be the same. He didn’t seek fame yet it found him. I grew up captivated by his preaching. As a little girl, we would gather in our living room. My dad would call friends or family and remind them to tune in to the crusade. And when the program started you could have heard a pin drop.

My fave part every night was at the end when “Just As I Am” and Billy’s altar call drew the crowds to follow Christ. I so wanted to be just like him. I’d plan my own little church service in our yard complete with chairs and a center aisle. Dogs, cats and siblings were my audience. I had memorized Billy’s words and was ready for Just As I Am.

Many years later, I would sit at Liberty University’s graduation to hear Billy Graham speak. It was the chance of a lifetime and despite the cold, drenching rain I was glued to every word he spoke.
Perhaps that’s why the homegoing of this spiritual giant has touched a tender spot in my heart. Billy was such a humble servant of God. He was a man respected, loved and admired by so many. But what people thought of him was not on his agenda. Billy was clearly doing what God had called him to do faithfully. He never watered down the gospel; he simply spoke the truth in love and grace.
Can’t even imagine what that reunion was like in heaven when he met Jesus. Would have loved to see the faces of those who got saved under Billy’s ministry waiting for his arrival. A life well lived with all the glory going to his Heavenly Father.

One day, we too will stand before God. Praying we don’t dance in the light of our own glory on this earth. Praying we seize opportunities to humbly, graciously share our faith with others. Praying we live the life we talk about authentically. Praying we remain faithful and true to His words. Praying that when we walk through Heaven’s gates we will hear our Father say, “Well done good and faithful servant.”

“Father, how we long to hear Your voice, to enjoy Your presence and to experience the life You have planned for us. What a glorious day that will be.”

For His Glory
