When I think of Mother’s Day it has a two-fold meaning. One, I am grateful to God for the opportunity and privilege to be a mother. For some that may not have children, you may be the mother figure to family, siblings, or others God has placed in your path.
Second, Mother’s Day is about giving honor to the mother God gave you, whether in person or in memory of. They may or may not have been the best example of motherhood, but the word of God still commands us to honor them.
As Mothers’ an important part of our responsibility is the training and nurturing of our children. Proverbs 22:6 tells us that if we “Train up a child in the way he should go, that when he is old, he will not depart from it.” As society becomes more immoral and perverse, we (as Christian Mothers), need to intentionally deposit sound moral and ethical (biblical) principles into the lives of our children. We need to show them how to choose their friends wisely, because “Bad company corrupts good morals.” (1 Corin. 15:33) We must encourage them to make wise choices that are in step with biblical teaching.
Our daughters should be taught modesty in their dress and appearance, respecting themselves and thus honoring God. (I Tim. 2:9). Our daughters must know Gods purpose for their lives whether in marriage or family, singleness, and life in general. Proverbs 31 provides an excellent description of the mindset of a godly woman in her daily walk.
We must also model a life of prayer before our children, teaching them how to pray and praying with them. We need to expose our children to activities that will challenge and grow their faith in God. We not only need to wipe their tears, but there will be many times, that we may have to cry with them. They need to see us being transparent, loving, and yet firm and walking in the spirit – obeying the word of God.
As we prepare to celebrate this Mother’s Day, please remember your training, your testimony, and the teaching that you impart to your children will have an eternal value on their life. Let’s point them to Jesus!
“Father, thank you for opportunities to impact this next generation for You. May we as Mother’s seek Your face and Your will daily to make an eternal impact for Your kingdom.”
For His Glory
