An Endless Circle of Love

july 29 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” Mark 12:30-31 (NLT)

Recently, I watched some birds building a nest. The female bird flew up to the nest with the twigs, while the male bird stood on the railing.  Sometimes he was watching, and sometimes he held additional twigs.  Then they flew off together to gather more twigs. They spent an entire day doing this, never changing their positions.  My husband made a joke about it saying, “He’s just standing there while the woman is doing all the work.” I laughed at first, and then I considered something. These birds knew what they are supposed to do – they knew their role.

Do you know your role in life? I’m not talking about who you are or your chosen profession. I mean do you know your real purpose? According to God, not the world?  God’s greatest command to us was to love Him with everything that we have and to love others. Jesus said these are the greatest commandments. Why? Because when we live this commandment out in everyday life it covers all things. God loves us with His protection, provision, forgiveness, and relationship. We love ourselves with acceptance of that love, then we pass onto others the love we have been given with kindness, compassion, support, prayer, etc…. which in turn points them to the One who loves them the most.  Round and round it rolls in an endless circle of love, giving us what we need.

“Thank you God for knowing what we all need and giving us this command to follow. Forgive us for not fulfilling our roles by following this command daily. Help us to take the love You give us and pass it on to others.”

Moved By Faith

july 28“She said to herself, “If I only touch His cloak, I will be healed.”  Matthew 9:22 (NIV)

We don’t know what goes on in people’s hearts. We don’t know their struggles, pain, or shortcomings. But God does. All we need to do is believe.

During a recent trip I took to South Carolina, I had the privilege to meet some more of my family in the Lord, as I attended a church service with my hosts. One man, in particular, struck me as being in need of a special touch from the Lord.  Following that nudge by the Holy Spirit, once church was over, I approached that man and his wife and explained to them that I would like their permission to pray for him, if that would be alright.

Once we entered an empty room, I proceeded to get my bottle of anointing oil from my purse and explain the meaning of it. That man wept. He explained that when he was a little boy, he watched many instances when his grandmother would get out her anointing oil and pray over the sick. According to him, he witnessed several miracles from her act of faith.

Unbeknownst to me, that man was in need of a miracle. To him, having a woman visit his church and offer to pray for him with the same kind of faith and using oil like his beloved grandmother, made him believe even more for the healing he was seeking after.

In Matthew 9, we read about a few miracles performed by Jesus. Among them was a woman who had been suffering from a bleeding problem for 12 years. When that woman heard that Jesus was in town and praying for people, she immediately placed herself in a position where she could touch His cloak, because she believed that just by touching Him, she would be healed. And so it happened. Her faith was enough to get Jesus to proclaim her healing.

A woman exercising her faith for someone else’s healing through prayer and the anointing with oil. Another woman softly touching the Messiah’s cloak. Both humans in search of miracles, driven by their faith in their God. All we need to do is believe.

“Dear Lord, we are thankful for Your supernatural intervention as we call upon Your name. You are faithful. Amen.”

A Promise Kept

july 26“I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my permanent promise to you and to all the earth.” Genesis 9:13 (NLT)

Remember as little children peering up to an expansive baby blue sky on a beautiful, clear day and playing “cloud Pictionary?”  Pointing out a particular cloud and tracing it with our finger showing our friends how that specific cloud looked like an animal, shape or thing. Dismayed when your friend couldn’t make out the same characteristics your eyes had discovered.

Huge, fluffy, white puffs of “cotton candy” floating in the sky on a canvas of the prettiest blue. Clouds intrigue me! The other day as I was driving, I couldn’t wait for a red light so I could stop and take in their beauty. It seemed the clouds were at the tips of my fingers, as if I could have plucked one right out of the sky. However, clouds are not always pleasant shapes of white fluff, but dark menacing masses of condensed water vapor ready to release thousands of gallons of water with a clap of thunder and a streak of lightening. Clouds usually tell if a storm is on the horizon when they cast dark shadows on the earth and hide the sun.

Unfortunately, we will experience storms of life, but as with storms of nature after the fury passes be looking for that spectacular rainbow following the storm God has brought us through. A glorious, breathtaking visual covenant adorning the skyline.  An arch of seven colors caused by rays of light from the once hidden sun dancing off water droplets decorating the sky. A spectrum of color displaying the permanent promise from God. A promissory note stretched across the wide blue yonder illuminating the words “I promise.”

A prominent exhibit for the whole world to see. A reminder to all creation that God is a Promise Keeper. To see a rainbow, you have to experience the storm and when the storms of life rage; God is our calm in the eye of the storm. We can be confident just beyond the turbulence of life there is a rainbow colored with His love and His promises.

Jehovah Jireh: Our God Provides

july 22“Philip answered him, “It would take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!”  John 6:7 (NIV)

Why do we get up each day, get ready and head to work? Why do we look for a paycheck at the end of each pay period?”

If you are like me, you work because you need to earn a living, which means doing whatever we can to ensure our survival: having food on the table, having routine medical checkups, paying for transportation, which could mean taking a bus, subway or owning a car.  We also separate part of our wages for tithes, education, leisure, clothing, and unavoidable emergency needs such as surgeries or vehicle repairs. All these things require money, and we must work and depend on our wages, i.e. paychecks.

Now imagine Jesus by the Sea of Galilee, surrounded by a multitude of 5,000 people who, followed Him around to listen to His teachings and partake of His healing. Though that multitude was being fed spiritually, however, there came a time when they also got physically hungry.  You can probably imagine that it’d be very hard to get a caterer to deliver by the Sea of Galilee, especially if you take into consideration that a camel’s back is not even close to being the most suitable vehicle to carry food, because it entails a very slow and bumpy ride.

Jesus asked one of His disciples, Philip, where they would buy food to feed the hungry people. He knew exactly what the answer would be, but He asked anyway, because those people were about to see a miracle. Philip didn’t even hesitate to say that in order to feed those people, it would take more than half a year’s wages. So, incidentally a young boy, probably a street vendor, appeared with a basket holding five small loaves of barley bread and two small fish.  Jesus took that food, blessed it, and passed it on to His disciples, who, in turn, passed it on to the people and they all ate to be satisfied. Oh, yes, but not only that!!! They collected 12 baskets full of leftover food after everyone was done eating.

Are you living dependent upon a paycheck? Are you worried about how you will pay your bills each month? Give it up to Jesus. Ask Him to bless the work of your hands. Follow His lead and you will see your prosperity grow and multiply because our God provides.

“Lord, thank You for being our Jehovah Jireh.”

Intimate Conversations

July 21“Pray continually.”  I Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV)

We all agree that prayer is an important part of our Christian walk. However even with the best intentions prayer can sometimes get moved to the bottom of the list or sometimes off the list completely.  There was a time when I knew my prayer life was suffering, yet 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says “pray continually.”   I was hardly praying at all, let alone continually.  So I got a little creative.  Here are some of the things I did to recharge my prayer time.  I still use several of these methods today:

    • Prayer Journaling-You can use a binder, a small notebook or even a pack of index cards. A binder can be divided into sections with daily, weekly or monthly prayer needs.  You can use a small notebook to simply write out your prayers to God.  Or tuck a stack of index cards in your Bible with a different list of people and prayer needs for each day of the week.
    • Out and About Praying-This is just praying in the car while you are driving throughout the day. You can incorporate daily prayer lists if you want or just pray for what comes to mind.
    • Walk the Dog Praying- When the dog needs to go out, I take him and  pray while I wait.  If I need a longer prayer time, I’ll take him for a short walk.
    • Chore Prayers- Doing household chores are good times to pray.  Folding laundry, sweeping, dusting, are all perfect times to pray. Our hands are busy, but our mouths are free to talk to God.

Remember we can pray anytime, anywhere, and anyway. Start small. The key to maintaining our prayer life is to find something that will work for us.

“Lord, thank You that we can communicate with You directly through prayer. Help us to keep prayer at the top of our list for the day.”

Giving Our Best To The Best

july 20“A woman came to Him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on His head as He was reclining at the table.”  Matthew 26:7 (NIV)

In Biblical times, perfume played a very significant part in kings’ coronation, as it did in burials. Many would work hard to be able to afford the perfume they would use for the burial of their loved ones or themselves. Such perfume was expensive and highly regarded, and was kept in alabaster jars.

For the users of Chanel 5 or Trésor by Lancôme, you would know a drop goes a long way and you don’t want anyone mishandling your perfume with the possibility any will go to waste. If necessary, you will even hide your perfume bottles when careless relatives are around, to ensure they won’t even come close to them.

Well, if this could apply to you, then you will understand this story. Jesus is in Bethany, at the home of Simon the Leper, having a meal with His disciples.  A woman named Mary shows up, bringing along about a year’s worth of wages in perfume in her prized alabaster jar.

What do you think Mary did? Do you think she dabbed a little on her finger and touched the forehead of all those who were gathered there? Do you think she rubbed some on her hands and touched selected people in the room? Or did she just touch Jesus with the perfume in her hands?

Mary used the perfume, but it was not a little dab or a little drop. She used it all, and all at once, and all on ONE person. The Bible says Mary poured all of the content of her alabaster jar on Jesus’ head. A woman anointing her Lord without reservations, without worrying about the cost or about what other possible use she could find for the perfume. She gave her best to the Lord  –  no questioning and no second thoughts. She openly and generously blessed the Lord with her action, as that anointing would be of great significance for what was about to happen to Jesus (being betrayed and killed).

What is it that you are placing before Jesus today? What is your “perfume,” or offering that you bring before the One who blesses you day-in and day-out? Is your heart His? If not, surrender it to Him at once, for when the Lord is King over your life, you have the best assurance ever: He will never leave your side.

“Here is my heart, Jesus; I surrender it to You. Be Lord over my life.”

But God

july 19“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

The phone rings, the text comes in and suddenly everything changes. Life as it was is no longer. The world just got rocked. The storm is here and here to stay it seems. The pain is real and not easily shaken.

What’s the next step? Hide, run, ignore, call, pray, read, or research? The first thing to remember is that He knew, and He knows the outcome. That alone should be reassuring, but it requires trust and trust is not easy.

Life is scary, uncertain, and has just thrown an unexpected curve ball. It is easy to sulk and hide, or run the other direction. But, the situation doesn’t change. Research yes, read a book, search the internet –  the answer must be there. Call a friend, maybe they have the answer, share what was learned in the research. The pain doesn’t subside it’s now just shared.

The only answer is prayer and scripture; God has the answer. God holds the peace. God knows and God is. When we let go and let God there is peace. It’s still not easy but it is covered. We know that God has a reason and a plan. We can’t change it, but we can trust His plan. There Is rest in letting go and letting God.

“Father, open my eyes to trust You more; don’t let me get caught up in the storm. Let me see what You see, help me not to fear the uncertain but trust Your plan. “

Ready, Set Go!

july 18“…..Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”  Hebrews 12:1b (ASV)

My hubby and I were enjoying some relaxing time at his parents’ house when my mother-in-law looked out the window and cried, “Look! A turtle!”  Next to the big tree in their front yard was a little turtle crawling around.  Wow, talk about perseverance!  Where in the world this little guy came from, we don’t know! We have never seen turtles in their yard before.   But wherever he came from, he got to the big tree in the front yard by continuing to put one foot in front of the other.  He kept moving, kept trying, took a rest when needed, but didn’t give up!

Wonder if we could do the same – persevere and press through one step at a time, one foot in front of the other?  How are we doing with our goals?  Have we given up, because that big tree was just too far away?  Have we told ourselves we’re never going to reach our goals? Well, set those lies aside, we CAN do it!  Just stick with it, and work at it each day! It’s never too late to do the right thing!  Start today, and don’t look back!

“Father, how quickly we give up instead of moving forward. Help  us to keep our eyes fixed on You and enjoy the journey one step at a time.”

All Things Are Possible To God

july 15“I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27 (NIV)

I enjoy reminiscing about my children’s growing years and the many adventures we lived as a family. Some of the memories are good reminders that we have a God who is always watching over us, as some people will do silly things that could ultimately cost them their lives and yet, they come out unharmed to tell the story later.

My middle son, Andre, was always a daredevil in his childhood. Oftentimes, his creativity and lack of fear called for emergency room visits.  In the small East Texas town where my boys spent most of their childhood, members of our family were known on a first-name basis by the ER staff and doctors. One of the experiences lived by our fearless lad was that he took off the brake pads from his roller skates and ventured down a very steep concrete path at the Stephen F. Austin State University football stadium. This sent him zooming down that path like a lightning bolt, and landing under a chain-link fence, which had him trapped to the ground for what seemed an eternity.

I was panic-stricken, and my mother’s heart thought for sure my child would have a punctured lung or something like that.  I found myself completely impotent, unable to raise the metal screen to free my boy. As I called out to Jesus, some friends on their afternoon walk rushed to the rescue and released Andre from his temporary trap.

Life is full of little “surprises” that sometimes scare the daylights out of our minute, doubtful minds. Yet, when we remember that God is all-knowing, all-present, all-able, we can be like the prophet Jeremiah. He bought a field in a time when his homeland was being possessed by the Babylonians based solely on a promise made by God that one day that land would return to His people, and he, Jeremiah would be able to reclaim it.  Nothing is too hard for our God.

“Lord, when we call on Your name, You listen. When we pray to you, You act. May we always remember that there is nothing impossible for You.”

Poised For Victory

july 14“Use every piece of God’s armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:13 (NLT)

Pulling into our driveway, I noticed something just didn’t look right.  Getting out the car, I headed towards the front door and that’s when I saw it.  My beautiful overflowing petunias were gone, evaporated.  When I left early in the morning, I walked right past them without noticing a thing.  Nipped and frayed, my petunias now looked like a haircut gone bad.  Little snippets of leaves and vines circled the planter  – no flowering buds insight.  Who would do such a thing?  How cruel?  I couldn’t figure it out and then all of a sudden a harsh reality sunk in.  My petunias were probably devoured by those cute deer I had seen the night before.  Innocently running through our yard, I never thought they would be capable of destroying, devouring and ripping apart my petunias.  My husband confirmed my suspicions.   And while I was still fuming, he gave me some good advice to keep those deer from having a feast with my flowers.

You know, sometimes we leave our lives exposed like those petunias vulnerable to the attacks of one who loves to devour our best intentions.  Oh we might look like we’ve got it all together on the outside, but if we’re not doing something on the inside to protect our mind, soul and heart then we’re a sitting prey for Satan’s feast.  What looks innocent and cute in one moment turns into utter destruction in the daylight of dawn.

God’s divine advice – flee, resist and turn away – perfectly poised for victory.  Don’t even entertain drawing close to the edge of anything that could simply slide right in and devour us.  Don’t lower our guard for even a second boldly proclaiming we’d never do that while casting judgment on others.  Don’t be fooled into believing we’re stronger than our weakness or the last temptation.  Instead cling to God!  Gather His words around us and dare the enemy to come close.

“Father, we often entertain what we think we can control only to fall flat on our face.  Help us to realize that Your protection plan guarantees our success.”

For His Glory
