Stronger Together

MP910216391[1]“A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Proverbs 17:17 (NIV).

A good friend’s advice, comforting words, and presence can go a long way when one is walking through difficult situations.  In Exodus 17:8-15, we read about three friends – Moses, Hur, and Aaron – who had this kind of relationship. Faced with the tough leadership decision of assigning Joshua to fight a battle against the Amalekites, Moses told Joshua, “Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”  Moses knew that as long as his arms held up the staff of God, victory would be certain.

The battle lasted all day, and Moses soon found that holding his arms up all day was no easy feat.  If his arms faced down or brought down the staff of God, the Amalekites would start winning, so he needed to keep his arms up until the battle was over. When Moses’ friends saw that he was not able to fulfill his task alone, they quickly ran to the rescue.  Finding a stone for Moses to sit on, they held his arms up until sunset, i.e. until Joshua won the battle against the Amalekites.

“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 (NIV).  Like Moses, we are blessed with “Hurs” and “Aarons.” When the going gets tough, good friends are always present to pray with us, to cry with us, and to uplift us.  Is your battle too hard to go through alone? Are your arms too heavy to keep up? Let your friends stand in the gap with you.

“Father, we are so blessed to be called the family of God. And through Your love, we find the strength to encourage one another when the need arises. Thank You for blessing us with godly friends.”

Priceless Words

Two Young Women in Front of the Computer Talking“Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” Exodus 4:12 (NIV)

Do you ever struggle with knowing the right thing to say?  I sure do. As a writer I’m always editing, proofing, changing and attempting to perfect those words that fill my pages.  I’ll read them over and over again to ensure clarity.  I verify my scripture references carefully, and my knees get worn out on the floor as I bathe what I’ve written in prayer.  And the cool thing is when I seek God’s guidance, He shows me the revisions I need to make and assures me when the edit is done.  Unfortunately, I don’t always treat the spoken word with the same respect.  It is so easy to just let those words flow carelessly off our lips, rather than pause and seek God’s guidance.  As women our nurturing tendencies can often rise to the surface quickly handing out advice to solve anyone’s dilemma.  We love to help our husbands, children, siblings, friends, co-workers and even strangers.  We have a remedy for every situation that arises.  Why?  Because we want to help.  But sometimes, those words and our inquisitiveness can do more damage than good.  Like sandpaper on a glass top, our abrasiveness scratches the surface of tender hearts.  Not everyone wants a solution – sometimes they just want a shoulder to cry on. While our intentions are good, timing is critical when it comes to sensitive matters of the heart.  Unlike my writing, once those words are spoken they can’t be erased or revised.  Maybe that’s why God instructs us to be quick to listen and slow to speak. When we take the time to listen first, pause and seek God’s guidance then our words are priceless treasures.

“Father, help us to partner together to bathe our words in prayer.”

What A Wonderful World

devo feb 21“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  Genesis 1:1 (NIV)

As much as I grumble about getting up and taking the dogs out in the morning, I have to admit, secretly I enjoy this time. Often it is still dark. Although I can be a little fearful out in the yard in the dark, all of that goes away as soon as I look up. The beauty of the stars and moon in the sky takes my breath away. And I’m not afraid, I am in awe.

It has always amazed me that when God created the earth and everything on it, that He did so in such a beautiful way.  He could have just as easily created a no nonsense practical world with the very basics.  Things could have been bland in color, lacking in creativity or even uninspiring, yet at the same time we would have had everything we needed. But He didn’t. Instead He gave us a gift. God with His infinite love for us made this world beautiful. Just look around and you will see. He created plants to not only provide food and oxygen but that were lovely to look at as well. He gave us a sparkling night sky and a bright sunshine day sky that is also our calendar. He made animals that give us entertainment and joy as well as nourishment.  All of this was done for our benefit and our enjoyment.

So what is it for you? Animals, flowers, the moon and stars, the sun and clouds, ocean waves or mountain tops? Whatever your favorite part of creation is, take some time today and every day to feast your eyes on the wonderful world around us.

“Thank you God, for this beautiful and functional world You have created for us. Help us to take notice of the beauty that is all around us every day.”

The Lord Has My Hand

Infant Grasping Mother's Finger“But You, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; You consider their grief and take it in hand.” Psalm 10:14a (NIV)

God never sleeps nor slumbers; He sees what goes on in our lives 24/7. Even in times when we struggle and think He may not be noticing, He is there as our constant companion. In 2008, I was overwhelmed and struggled to “keep my head above the water.” On Easter Sunday, I lost my beloved Dad.  The month of June came, and funding for the program in which I worked was pulled leaving me unemployed. A month later, my spouse of 25 years suddenly moved out. Devastated and overcome by grief, I felt like my world was coming to an end. I cried out to God in such audible noises that my voice echoed inside my apartment.

One afternoon four years ago, God gave me a wonderful vision.  I saw myself as a tot holding my Dad’s hand and trying to keep up with his step. Gradually, I saw myself as the woman that I am, and I was now holding on to Jesus’ hand, walking side by side with Him. As I think back on that day, I am reminded that God cared enough to show me that He has my hand and walks with me through my trials. God does not leave us nor forsakes us; He is faithful.  If your world is crumbling and you feel your strength fading, look to Him, cry out to Him, and give Him all your troubles. He will see you through.

“Abba Father, there are so many times when my own strength fails me and tells me that I cannot keep on going; but I can, with Your help. Please help me to keep my focus on You, Lord, so that the disappointments of this world will not become the focus of my life and that I may always give glory to the One who deserves it: You!”

Tender Warrior

devo feb 20“One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.” 1 Samuel 16:18 (NLT)

This description of David definitely doesn’t sound like a shepherd. However, God knew that David would be a king and all these attributes would be necessary to lead the people of Israel. God knew that David would have to be sensitive to soothe troubled souls and also be ready for battle at a moment’s notice all while being in tune to His will. That’s a lot to balance, especially when sensitivity can often be seen as weakness. Whether he was a talented harp player or brave warrior, the Lord was with David.

I had the privilege of seeing these characteristics in my Granny. She was the typical sweet, southern grandmother but definitely had the fear of God on her side. She lived out her faith every day, and I thought she had God on speed dial. The words that struck fear in anyone who knew her was, “I’m going to put you on the altar.” My Granny didn’t fight physically; she fought spiritually and took you straight to God.

We may not be called to go to battle physically, but every day there is a spiritual battle going on. We need to be sensitive to the needs of others, while at the same time being on guard and ready for battle against the enemy. In both areas, we need a strong walk with God to discern which way God wants us to go.

“Dear God, Draw me near to You daily so I know which direction my steps should take. If it’s to minister to others help me to be loving and kind. If it’s to stand with You in battle, give me the strength and weapons needed.”

Our Inheritance

Young Woman Facing the Sky“Giving thanks unto the Father which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance and of the saints in light.” Colossians 1:12 (KJV)

Being adopted into God’s family, we will one day see Him face to face and partake of our inheritance. We are promised to reign with Jesus from mansions of glory. There will be no more sorrow, tears, fears, death, hunger, pain, nor suffering. We will be fellowshipping with God and believers forever. All that God has will be ours. “He that overcometh shall inherit all things, and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.” (Revelation 21:7)  We have so much to look forward to. We will have peace and joy that God gives us, but we don’t have to wait until we get to heaven to experience it. Remember Philippians 4:19 reminds us that God will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. This too is our inheritance here on earth. We might not all be monetarily wealthy, but we are certainly spiritually wealthy. God has made us to be partakers of his inheritance. We must be thankful and mindful of our inheritance. When we think of the great wealth we have in Christ we will never feel poor or lacking. When was the last time we thanked God for our inheritance? When was the last time we rejoiced in our inheritance? We must not take it for granted. As we meditate on the inheritance God has given us, our hearts will leap with joy.

“Lord I want to take the time to thank You for my inheritance that I can both enjoy now and in the hereafter. Thank You for making us spiritually wealthy. Thank You that we are partakers of Your inheritance.”

Fearless

devo feb 18]“…I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10b (KJV)

Before my husband and I were engaged, he did something pretty magnificent.   In fact it was this single act of love that confirmed in my heart that he was “the one.” I grew up swimming in beautiful calm lakes and beaches. My first “real” beach experience was after visiting Liberty University, I then ventured out to Virginia Beach. While swimming there I went too far out, got caught in an under-toe, and nearly drowned. I developed a fear of the deep ocean waves, and never again went in too deep.

While vacationing at Sunset Beach with my boyfriend’s family,  we spotted a beautiful sandbar.  I kindly refused his invitation to swim to it, but my boyfriend encouraged me and helped me get over that fear. My boyfriend said, “Hold on to me, I promise I won’t let you go.”  I held onto him the entire time!  We swam side by side.  When I was afraid he remained calm, encouraged me, and he kept swimming until we reached the sandbar.

Isn’t this true about our Savior, and Lord?  He wants us to experience life fully, all His goodness and beautiful plans, but fear and doubt sometimes holds us back and robs us of God’s joy!  He loves us enough to help us conquer fear and doubt.  His Son Jesus gives us the power, and when we trust God He will never let us drown even when things look hopeless!  How powerful!  Won’t you trust God and the people he has put in your life to help you?  You are not alone.

“Lord Jesus, help us to trust Your hand as we swim through scary waters in life, and may we never give up because of our fear and doubt.  Help us to experience Your true joy, and Your abundant life.”

The Bunny in Me

devo feb 15“But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise…”   1 Corinthians 1: 27a  (NIV)

As I progress along this journey of life, I must confess that I often feel like I’ve got the horsepower of the Energizer Bunny when what I really want is the force and strength of a high-grade, combat-ready, all-terrain vehicle!!  I desperately long for the capacity to roar through the hills and inclines of life, yet here I am…slowly, gradually buzzing along.

Consequently, although my aim is to live as a modern-day, Proverbs 31 Wonder Woman, I am sometimes better suited for the role of Forest Gump… clinging tightly to my “box of chocolates.”  No matter how diligently I strive toward excellence, my best efforts are frequently met with resistance from the limitations that adorn my life.

To fail is never easy and to crawl through life at the pace of a pink, battery-operated bunny can be frustrating.  But, there’s good news!   Through the reality of weakness, God’s glory shines brightest through our frailty.   Some may live according to the notion that “weakness is not an option.”  But, I accept it as a prized commodity in God’s economy.  For example, Abraham Lincoln was actually quite a failure before the presidency.  Not only had he lost eight prior elections, but he also went bankrupt, was rejected from law school, failed at various vocational efforts and suffered an emotional breakdown.  He was well-acquainted with weakness, yet God used him to change the world…because his frailty set the stage for God’s power to be revealed!

“Father, I thank You for the weaknesses that bring us to the end of ourselves and on our knees before a holy God.  Grant us the hope to rise in the face of defeat and the strength to press on…knowing that Your glory is best revealed through imperfect vessels.”

Love Of My Life

Rose On Wood BW“Above all, love each other deeply because love covers a multitude of sins.” I Peter 4:8 (NIV)

Red shoe box decorated with white hearts – a slit in the top – perfect for my valentines to slide right in.  Tiny little hands clutched that box as I stepped onto the school bus.  It was the day my “love tank” would be filled with all those silly, crazy valentines. The girls giggled and the boys smirked.  Love was a simple commodity – easily given no strings attached.    So why does love become so complex and complicated the older we get.  Maybe it’s because we allow the wrong things to fill our “love tanks.”  Maybe it’s a result of us not filling someone else’s “love tank.”  Maybe it’s because we keep our love tightly clutched to avoid hurt.  Maybe it’s because our expectations exceed what we are willing to give or sacrifice.

Hope and joy filled my “love tank” unexpectedly one day.  Sweet conversations shared – just the two of us.  My heart skipped at the thought of Him – it still does.  And He not only captured my heart but taught me how to love.  He didn’t even keep a list of my wrongs – even though there were many.  And when it came to the ultimate sacrifice, His nail pierced hands spoke His love to me covering a multitude of sins.  Red intermingled with white to unveil my new heart –now perfectly welcoming my valentine.  Wonder what would happen if I loved others too – if I loved deep like Jesus?  No strings attached – just simple grace and forgiveness extended.

“Father, You have captured my heart forever – teach me how to give that love away every day.”

Choosing Joy

Attractive Woman Holds Her Cap Isolated on a White Background.“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Psalm 30:5b (KJV)

It was finally here!!! Displaying the power of an incomprehensible God –millions of distinct snowflakes had magnificently transformed typical landscapes into gorgeous, snow-blanketed masterpieces!   Building snowmen, sleigh rides, snowball fights, and homemade snow cream would become a reality for every excited snow lover!

During my devotions that morning, I noticed one distant bird joyfully singing a sweet melody praising his Creator.   Truthfully, my mind questioned if the bird pondered during the long, snowy, cold night if finding his food would be challenging the next morning.   Although it may have necessitated harder work, he discovered God’s provision was exactly what he needed!

How often do believers doubt God’s provision allowing worry to dominate sleepless nights?  Why does the challenge of completely trusting Him frighten us?  And, why do we hesitate to be the one who praises Him regardless?  God’s Word teaches in Matthew 6:26 that we are more valuable to God than the birds of the air; therefore, we can be assured God is going to meet our needs every morning – whatever they may be.   Facing some horrific, personal circumstances, the Lord recently challenged my heart to daily choose joy.  Like the bird it might require a little more effort, but finding joy must be intentional – focusing on God’s sovereignty.  Making this choice assures God’s child though he grieves, the joy of the Lord is his stronghold (Nehemiah 8:10) and – weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. (Psalm 30:5b).  This transformation will be His joyful, gorgeous masterpiece as well!

“Dear Father, please help me to determine in my heart to intentionally choose joy despite the circumstances life may bring.”
