Glorifying God

“Glorify the Lord with me; let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 34:3 (NIV)

Home Economics was never my favorite class.  In fact, I actually only made it through one semester.  For some reason, cooking and sewing were foreign to me in my high school years.  Maybe it had to do with the fact that my Mom rarely shared her kitchen.  Regardless, I have grown to love cooking, but sewing is still on the back burner.  I don’t even like the thought of sewing on a button, and I could never hem a pair of pants.   Just the thought of a needle and thread sends me running in the opposite direction.  Yet I would be the first to admit, I admire people who pick out fabric, a pattern and create something beautiful.  Amazing how God does the same thing.  Created in His image, God  picked us out and patterned our lives to convey the beauty of His glory.  Like a single thread, He desires to weave all of our actions, words and thoughts into a tapestry of His glory that is beyond our imagination.  We might look rough and messy on the flipside, but the One knitting our lives together will shine through for all the world to see.  When we yield ourselves to the pattern of His love, our Designer label will draw others to admire His handiwork.

“Father,  we magnify Your name, we praise the works of Your hands and we stand in awe of Your creativity.  You alone are to be praised; use our lives to show the world how beautiful You truly are!”

Joy Unspeakable

Whom having not seen…ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.”  1 Peter 1:8 (NIV)

Prayer, diet Coke and a hot shower get me moving in the morning – what about you.  Do you flip on some praise music or sip on your favorite coffee?  I have to admit winter mornings are my least favorite; I’d much rather stay under the covers.  But if I bury my head and keep snoozing then I’ll miss seeing the day that God is unfolding before me.  So deep inside me a little spark ignites the mystery of His incredible ways luring me to not miss a moment.  Unknown encounters and uncharted paths await us even in our own little world, yet we rejoice because of who He is.  We sing because of His love, and we dance in the shower because of His grace pouring over us.  Face to face we have never met, yet the Lover of our Souls greets us each morning filling our hearts with joy unspeakable.  Even in the midst of great uncertainties, we will find that our God is more than enough to carry us through. Especially when the day is promising a crazy schedule and tons of deadlines, our invisible God reveals His strength to us moment by moment.  And when we sometimes lose our song, He lifts us up and sings over us as we journey together.  Absolutely takes our breath away!  The awesomeness of our Great God accompanies us wherever we go – even though we have not seen Him, we can be fully aware of His presence.

“Father, open our eyes so we will see You walking hand in hand with us every day – never missing a beat, never leaving us alone.”

Daily Dependence

Unto thee, O Lord do I lift up my soul.” Psalm 25:1

As a child, I always demonstrated an independent spirit. I actually think I learned this trait from one of my grandmothers who was a business woman.  She was confident, smart, wise and had no problem making tough decisions.    I had no idea what an impact she would make on my life.  Those very traits that at times intimidated me as a child, later sparked that independence in me as a young woman.  I found it easy to make decisions at work or home where I was a singleparent to my son; but when huge challenges arose, I eagerly sought out God’s guidance.  Gradually, I learned that God wanted me to turn to Him even when my common sense and natural instincts knew what to do.   It was in the day to day aspects of life that God molded my independent spirit to be dependent on Him regardless of my resources or capabilities.  Have you ever found yourself maneuvering down that path?  The decision is simple, a no brainer –   organize a yard sale, lead a Bible study, discipline a child, mentor a friend, hire an assistant, run a business, etc.  We’ve done it before a million times – made those daily little decisions that seem insignificant.  Yet in God’s eyes all our decisions made independent of His Spirit are significant.  His insight, wisdom and sovereignty provide a safety net that covers all aspects of our lives.  All we have to do is seek Him out daily allowing our dependence to be in Him rather than ourselves.

“Father today belongs to You.  Revolutionize my spirit so that my heart is confident in You alone!”

Reality Check

Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” Mark 10:35b (NIV)

Looking out for  #1 is as common place as the dusty roads leading to Jerusalem.  Who would have ever imagined that two of Jesus disciples would make such a demand to the One who had spent His time unselfishly serving others?  Jesus sought no earthly throne; in fact He was adamant that all glory belonged to His Father.  Yet James and John sought an exalted position:  one sitting at the left and the other sitting at the right of Jesus in His glory.  We would never ask such a thing for ourselves or would we?  We would never demand that Jesus do whatever we ask or would we?  Looking out for our best interests will always lead us down a road of increasing demands.  Without even realizing it, we will find ourselves pushing for the best seat, picking out the best job for serving in our church, and impatiently expecting others to serve us.  Jesus knew the secret of influence and it was found in serving others.  He not only demonstrated those words, but He created opportunities to train His inner circle to follow in His footsteps.  Maybe this week, we need to take a reality check and listen in to our prayers, demands and selfish requests.  Are we seeking God or are we simply demanding that He do for us whatever we ask?

“Father, may our requests be filtered through a heart of service to others.  Keep our prayers balanced and our motives pure so that we will be living expressions of Your love.”
