“Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.” Isaiah 26:4 (ESV)
It’s always scary doing something for the first time. Have to admit, I get a little shaky in my boots when I’m stepping out on unfamiliar territory. We probably all feel that way when we don’t know what to expect and we’re not sure how we’re going to respond. First thing that creeps into our mind is “will I be able to do it?” I can just taste the hesitancy and lack of confidence in those words.
So do you run to new or hold out for familiar? My go to response is definitely to put off new until I feel I can accomplish it. Sounds wise and discerning, but what about those things God brings to our plate – new adventures that require faith stretching? Ouch! Don’t really want to go there; my response is typically the same. Hate to admit it but the “I” in me doesn’t always serve me well.
Opting out of experiencing new robs us of growth and the joy of total dependence on God. Even the most successful people experienced firsts, but they didn’t let any failures derail them from trying again. Everyone who has ever accomplished anything started with a “first.” Let those words settle in for a moment – we are actually no different than anyone else. Stepping out in faith when God has clearly paved the way might stretch us, but it will totally revolutionize what we attempt in the future.
Love the way scripture reminds us of those who took huge steps of “firsts.” Noah had never built an ark nor seen the first drop of rain. Yet he followed God’s directions perfectly. Moses had never been in a leadership role until he met the fiery bush. Yet God used this shepherd to deliver His people. Esther had never summoned the king nor put her life on the line. Yet her actions saved her people.
What a list of “firsts!” One person’s act of faith can have a ripple effect. One person’s act of faith can spur us all on to choose new instead of familiar. Let’s put our name out there. Let’s agree to accept God assignments we’ve never experienced before. Let’s not waste another chance or offer a bag of excuses. Yes, we maybe shaking in boots but God will be there right there with us cheering us on one step at a time.
“Sweet Jesus thank You for pushing us out of familiar and teaching us how to fully trust and depend on You.”
