The Sting of Pursuit

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.” Proverbs 2:6-7 (ESV)

I so love planting flowers.  A few weeks ago, some of my husband’s family came and planted my flowers for the summer.  We mulched, pulled weeds and put some beauties in the ground. It was such a fun evening despite the extreme heat and humidity.  We drank a lot of Gatorade and had Milky Way ice cream bars as a treat.

Two days later, as I was heading out to work, I found one of those beauties from my flower bed laid out on my sidewalk.  Mr. Groundhog was the culprit.   Evidence revealed he thought he wanted those pretty pink flowers but decided it wasn’t what he wanted so he left them discarded on the sidewalk.

Perfect example of what we often do.  We think we want something or a particular result,  and when we get it, we decide it really wasn’t as appealing as we first thought.  Perhaps it was the delish dessert that looked so appealing, but after a few bites, we realized it wasn’t worth the calories.  Perhaps it was the outfit we splurged on, but after wearing it once, we wish we hadn’t spent those bucks.  Or it could be a long awaited dream, but once it was fulfilled we began to question its original appeal. Regardless, we could probably all relate to things we thought we wanted and then quickly discarded.

Unlike the groundhog’s easily discarded flowers, some things in life simply can’t be truly discarded without some repercussions.  Whether it’s calories, money or dreams, our self pursuit of what we desire can often lead us down paths we would have rather avoided.  Yet if we bring God into the equation of our desires and heed His leading we can avoid disillusionment and disappointment. Especially when it comes to what appears appealing or worthy of the splurge, we would be wise to halt and seek God’s direction rather than let the temporary perceived desire rule over our decisions.

As we tackle another week, may we rest in God’s wisdom.  By spending time in His word, meditating on scripture and surrendering in prayer, we can have a solid base to  pursue and trust God’s desires for our lives.  It may look totally different than we envisioned, yet we can always trust God to teach us what is best for us.

“Sweet Jesus thank You for the gift of Your Word and gift of Your Presence leading and guiding us each day. Help us to not discard the pivotal truths You desire to reign over our decisions.

For His Glory
