Resilient Faith

“So keep up your courage, men for I have faith in God that it will happen just as He told me.” Acts 27:25 (NIV)

Durable, long lasting, resilient – we search for products with staying power.  In this economy, we want to know our money is spent well and we’re getting the best return possible.  We will inspect, study and even verify to make sure we’re not getting a flimsy replica of the real thing.  We will think twice, even four times, before walking out that store with the latest gadget or accessory in our bag.  And we can’t wait to pull it out and put it to use.  Maximizing our dollars can be challenging, and the same is true when it comes to maximizing our faith.  who doesn’t want durable, long lasting resilient faith?  Early in our Christian walk, we learn that it is impossible to please God without faith so we set our aim on staying strong.  Then the inevitable happens, disappointments mount up, comfort zones are ripped away and security rolls right out the window.  Challenges designed to stretch and grow our faith unfortunately find us clamped down with a clinched fist.  Staking our stance, we cower and brace for cover rather than reach towards God.  Durable no.  Long lasting forget it.  Resilient not this time.  The stakes are too high, and we give God and the world a flimsy replica of what real faith is all about.  Unfortunately, He cannot unleash His staying power of faith in us unless we are willing to believe He is who He says He is.  Quite a simple statement yet packed with a gutsy revelation that maximizes our trust in the One True God.  Stretched – yes.  Exhausted and weary – you better believe it.  Durable, long lasting, resilient to the very end – that ‘s the faith walk that pleases God.

“Father, because of Your great name, we can place our faith confidently in You!”

Sing Out

Yet, Lord my God, give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy.  Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence.” 2 Chronicles 6:19 (NIV)

Praise Him in the morning, afternoon and all throughout the night.  I just love those days that I yearn for Him.  My heart cries out for Him.  It is such a wonderful feeling to cry out to God and tell Him how much I love Him.  I especially enjoy those times sitting at His feet crying Hosanna, Holy One, Savior, Blessed Redeemer, and the list goes on and on.  As we praise God for who He is, He gently reminds us of things we need to work on in our lives, and how we can glorify Him more.  He is so worthy of making time for – it is all about Him anyway right?  Thankfully the Holy Spirit works in our lives and pulls that desire out of us to shout praises to His name.  Gently, He leads us back into the worship mode inspiring us to shine brightly for Him as we listen for His will in our lives.  Sing it out, praise His name, bask in His glory, worship Him with all that is inside you and pour out your praises to the King of Kings.

“Father, You are amazing, You are ABLE, You alone are marvelous and worthy to be praised and worshipped.  Thank you for always being there.”

Unveiling Truth

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” I John 1:8 (NIV)

Funny, how quickly we claim innocence when things go wrong.  Have you ever been there? As a child, I remember my mother drilling us kids to determine which one of us was at fault in the latest escapade.  Often, I would attempt to cast blame on my sisters or brother; however, the truth prevailed and mom was able to uncover the guilty one.  As an adult navigating life, we too can be drawn to our own innocence even when the truth unveils another side of the story.  It’s so easy to point the finger at someone else then to re-examine our own actions and motives.  When things go wrong, we justify and excuse ourselves without a second glance.  Sometimes we will even relish in our victim role convincing others of the injustice and unfairness.  Found myself in that role a few weeks ago.  Difficult circumstances left me vulnerable to someone else’s actions.  The effects sent me to the Father proclaiming I was an innocent bystander who was reeling from consequences beyond my control.  My mind was cluttered with blame pointing rather than self examination.  The event played over and over in my mind without a thought to what I could have done.  Finally, God grew weary of my drama and gently lifted the blinders off my eyes.  While I indirectly hadn’t caused my consequences, God revealed an area of disobedience that may have impacted the results.  Seeing right through my self-proclaimed innocence, God peeled away the layers exposing the truth.  Humbled I made my confession, accepted His grace and removed my pointing finger.

“Father, Your grace is enough  – help us to come boldly before Your throne admitting we are desperate for Your truth to saturate our lives.”

Captivated By His Presence

“My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him.” Psalm 62:1 (NIV)

We live for Friday – you know the moment when the weekend begins.  Work on a major project ceases, emails can wait and just the thought of Saturday morning pushes us through the day.  Destination 5:00 pm, we’re headed to the beach.  I can taste the salt air.  I can feel the cool breezes, and Saturday never looked so good.  There is no place I feel closer to God than watching the sun dance across the ocean or waves breaking on shore.  Just gazing across the water and knowing I can’t define where it starts or stops reminds me of the magnitude of my God. Watching a father lifting up his daughter above the crashing waves reminds me of the times my Heavenly Father has lifted me above my circumstances.  Enjoying an early morning walk as the sunrise quietly appears reminds me that God makes all things new each and every day.  Captivated by dolphins as they glide effortlessly across the waves reminds me that God creates the perfect environment for all of His creation to thrive.  Moonbeams glistening across the dark waters reminds me that God’s light always shines through even in the darkest depths of our soul. Nothing refreshes my spirit more than to bask in the wonder of God’s presence.  Sometimes it’s hard to chill out and just relax allowing our mind to be recharged and our spirit renewed. Satan specializes in stealing away our moments of silence and reflection because he knows we can’t help but linger on the goodness of our God.  His substitutes can be found lurking around any corner. So what or who is refreshing your spirit?

“Father, there are no words to describe how awesome You are, how incredible You are and how much I love the very thought of You!”

Is It Time To Prune?

“The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.”  Proverbs 12:26 (NKJ)

Who are the friends that impact our lives the most?  Are they friends that advise us to walk closely with the Lord?  Do they challenge us to dig deeper, or do they sympathize with our struggles and let us bask in our own pity?

A true Christian friend will defiantly empathize with our struggles, but will also force us to see what God might want us to see in a situation.  Where is the glory we can bring to Him thru this?  Is there a lesson we are to learn?  It’s important to take time to determine if a person is impacting our lives in a negative or positive way.  Are they challenging me to read God’s Word and seek guidance from Him?  Are they spending time praying over needs I have shared with them, and am I praying over their needs?  Do they let me whine about my issues without pressing me to see what lessons are to be learned in this valley?

It’s time to do some pruning; it’s not an easy task.  Choose friends who are going to encourage serving and ministering growth.  Why settle when God has provided people around you who love Him and can’t wait to grow and challenge you in the same way.

Father, Thank You for challenging, truth giving friends.  Help me as I prune and pick the ones who will sharpen me and I can sharpen them.

A Living Sacrifice

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1 (NlV)

Have you ever noticed how motivated we get to lose weight when a big event is coming up? A wedding, milestone birthday, or a high school reunion can quickly make us take a second look at our weight. Our bodies are actually a living sacrifice to God, so on a daily basis we should be paying attention to how we are treating our bodies. If we are going to be offering something to God, we should want it to be our best. However, this is an area that takes a lot of discipline to keep things under control. It takes work to get into shape and to really make sure our bodies are at their best.

It’s not only our physical bodies that we need to present as a living sacrifice, but our daily walk as well. Everything we do and say should honor and glorify God. The verse above written in the Message Bible below helps us put this verse into perspective.

Romans 12:1-2 (The Message) Place Your Life Before God

“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

“Dear God, May we focus on presenting our best to You and the world on a daily basis. May every decision, word, action, and attitude reflect You in us.”

Looking For Answers?

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.  James 1:5 (NIV)

How many times do we have to be reminded when answers are needed we just have to go to the Father?  He wants to guide us and share with us, but we don’t slow down enough to ask.   If we do ask, we often forget to wait long enough for His answer.

God’s timing is always perfect.  How much stronger we would be if we spent more time at His feet giving Him praise thru our struggles or times of life’s unanswered questions.  He is there to lift up our faces and say, “I am here, all will be given to you that you need.”  I am so thankful for a forgiving God who loves us even thru our many faults extending grace and mercy generously.  Will you stop today and ask for the answer that you currently need?  Will you wait patiently for wisdom to be given to you or will you continue trying to solve the world’s problems yourself?  God allows us to be used to solve problems, but He doesn’t need our help.   When we yield everything to Him, He makes our load light and carries us through each day.

Father, thank You for providing just the right wisdom at just the right time. Thank you for reminding me of Your ability to solve problems without me.

For His Glory,

Releasing Chains

“But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.” Romans 6:17 (TNIV)

Are you a morning coffee drinker?  Do you get up at the same time each day?  Does the sound of your tv lull you to sleep each night?  Habits happen without us even realizing they exist.  We start doing something one day and weeks later we’re still doing it.  Often we don’t even see the pattern our lives are conforming to.   Some habits are worth not breaking.   Eating healthy food requires discipline and deliberate thought into our meal choices, but the payoff far exceeds the effort.  It’s a habit that yields great results.  Some habits stick around much longer than we anticipated.  Avoiding housework, procrastinating over laundry, failing to pay bills or just allowing our lives to be consumed with distractions creates a repetitive pattern of chaos for our lives.  It’s a habit that yields frustration and hasty reactions. Some habits slip in disguised as justification and quickly swirl into character traits we wish we could shake off.  Grumbling slides in when things don’t happen the way we envisioned.  We awaken one morning and allow our unmet expectations to saturate our thoughts with all the reasons why we deserve something better.  It’s a habit that steals our joy and keeps us bound with chains of disappointment.  While it takes a few weeks for an action to click over to a habit, breaking that behavior requires determination, conscious effort and perseverance.  It’s a job too big for us, but one that is tailor made for our God.  When we seek His help in daily rising above life-defeating patterns, we will form a habit that is worth not breaking.

“Father, You have already loosed the chains and set us free – help us to create life infusing habits that glorify Your name.”

Choose Joy

“The Lord is my strength and shield.  I trust Him, and He helps me.  I am very happy, and I praise him with my song.”  Psalm 28:7 (NCV)

Feeling blah, moody, and cranky?  We all have those days.  We are wired with emotions.  How we react and let those emotions control us is what makes us different.  It is so easy to just whine, complain, and feel miserable.  Satan knows when we feel down, we don’t feel like sharing the joy of Christ.  We give people reasons to believe being a Christian makes one miserable.

As a child, I remember Sunday School lessons when my teacher had circle faces on popsicle sticks.   One was a smiley face, and the other a sad face.   The teacher would sing a song about how the devil wants us to be grumpy, but Jesus wants us to be happy.  Then at the end she would say turn that frown upside down and smile!

What a great reminder when we feel down.  The devil wants us to be grumpy, but Jesus wants us to be happy, so turn that smile upside down. Sound easy?  Try it next time Satan gets under your skin and show him who’s in control.  It’s not easy, but with prayer and God everything is possible; you can turn that frown upside down. Plus, did you know frowning causes wrinkles and uses more muscles in your face than smiling?  Just another great reason to smile –  less wrinkles and it’s actually easier to do.  Love it!

“Father, Thank You for childhood songs to remind us to smile, please continue to fill my mind with You and Your words so I can always be seen smiling for You.”

Life Refreshing Words

‘In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.”  Job 2:10b (NIV)

Amazing how quickly our words can overrun our steps.  Trying to spending time with God and get some writing done, I found myself running out of patience.  A hectic schedule at work, a husband with a broken nose and too many things on my list didn’t help matters.  My fuse had been flickering all day as challenging situations stoked the flames even higher.  Unfortunately, my harsh words spewed out of my lips too quickly and singed the ones I loved the most.  As the smoke trail of my hasty words lingered, I could see the thick film of grey ash settling over our home.  The air was stifling and suffocated the grace that moments earlier had filtered our words and actions.  In the silence, moments hovered like hours as I finally made it back to my computer and writing.  Looking for some much needed inspiration, I opened up a list of verses and ideas I had collected over the last month.  And wouldn’t you know that God had prepared a verse especially for me at this very moment:  “In all this, Job did not sin in what he said.”  The fiery flames of my lips were swiftly extinguished as those words rang loud and clear.  My life paled in comparison to the fiery trials that exploded Job’s world.  His fuse had been flickering all day, yet his integrity and character wasn’t singed or suffocating those he encountered.  Instead the trail of trust he proclaimed in his God exploded into a fragrant aroma of praise and has ignited our hearts for thousands of years.

“Father, teach us to surrender our words to the life refreshing power of Your love and grace igniting others with the praise that changes everything.”

For His Glory
